AI predicts plausible text. Plausible is not the same as true.
Mitigations that work
- Ask AI to cite sources, then verify each one
- Request 'I don't know' as an allowed answer
- Split tasks: research, then summarise, then conclude
- Use AI to generate, then a fresh AI session to critique
- Never accept numbers without a named source
